A MSDS includes information such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, and spill/leakage procedures. It guides one on the appropriate handling of the chemicals, especially in the event of spills or human contact with the chemicals.

A specification provides information on the range of acceptable testing results of the specific chemical properties of a chemical.
